Ethics and LLMs – mapping the moral implications of current approaches to GenAI
Learning generalizable representations across different types of information, foundation models promise transformative advances in medical diagnosis, treatment, and patient care. However, pertaining to the inherent challenges associated with their respective capabilities, clinical adoption has so far lagged behind in silico testing. This talk will provide a comprehensive mapping of several ethical challenges arising from the development and deployment of foundation models in clinical medicine. By drawing on current use cases, special emphasis will rest on discussing the most pertinent ethical implications relating to LLMs in the realm of clinical oncology. This talk aims to foster a deeper understanding of the moral complexities surrounding foundation models in healthcare, and to provide a more nuanced reflection on the normative desiderata flowing from the risks and benefits of advanced medical AI systems.
