Understanding Upper GI Cancer in Ireland: Past Insights and Future Directions

Dr. Oana Deac is an Oncology Specialist Trainee and PhD candidate at Trinity College Dublin and St James’s Hospital, Ireland, investigating young-onset gastroesophageal cancer. Her work draws on population-based real-world data and explores how AI models can enhance clinical and translational research. Passionate about the power of large datasets to generate actionable insights, Dr. Deac aims to translate data findings into better patient outcomes.

In this lecture, she will present key findings from a national dataset of over 32,000 upper-GI cancer cases, highlighting trends in incidence, patient characteristics, and survival outcomes. She will then explore how modern machine-learning techniques could be applied to large real-world data—demonstrating how AI might uncover hidden prognostic patterns and support more precise, patient-centred cancer care.
