MedTech Hackathon

Medicine and technology are inextricably linked – this is what we deal with every day at the EKFZ at the TU Dresden and Telekom MMS GmbH. The EKFZ is a scientific institution that bundles the expertise of medical professionals and high-tech experts to promote interdisciplinary exchange. Telekom MMS is a digital service provider with expertise in the design of a future-proof healthcare system. They develop solutions that are integrated into our daily lives: personalized, digitized and, above all, preventive. Connections and insights into practice are therefore essential for us.

The patron of this year’s Hackathon is Prof. Dr. med. Carolin Schneider. She supports us with her expertise.

What are the use cases?

Are you creative, enthusiastic about technology and want to help shape the healthcare of the future? Then take part in our hackathon. You can work on one of the following use cases. 

Intensive care monitoring
Intensive care monitoring for critical illnesses such as sepsis is often very invasive and costly. This impairs the quality of treatment and places a burden on the healthcare system. Therefore, the groundwork is to be laid for the development of ultrasound-based smart patches that continuously and non-invasively monitor critical parameters such as blood flow. This would drastically reduce the response time to sudden changes, improve the patient experience and reduce the workload of medical staff.

Preparing for invasive procedures
When preparing for an invasive procedure, patients face the challenge that the information provided is often written in complex medical jargon. To ease the burden for both patients and physicians, patients should receive clear, personalized, and interactive explanations tailored to their individual medical situation and concerns. The solution idea is a chatbot based on a large language model (LLM) that integrates the results of patient questionnaires. This agent allows patients to ask personalized questions about their procedure and receive understandable, accurate answers.

Health-related misinformation
Health-related misinformation is a growing problem, especially when people search online for information about health issues and symptoms. Platforms such as social media, online advertising and forums play a significant role in spreading this information. Patients struggle to make informed decisions as they are confronted with biased narratives and cultural differences in health communication. To gain a better understanding of how health information is perceived and shared, health-related data from various online sources are analyzed via AI in terms of their impact on population health.
